China’s Growing Demand Continues to Reshape Global Trade Flows

This report analyzes structural changes in Japan’s crab market amid rapidly shifting global trade flows following the U.S. ban on seafood imports from Russia.

For many years, Japan relied heavily on frozen snow crab (Opilio) and red king crab products originating from the Russian Far East. However, since the U.S. imposed a ban on imports from Russia in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian crab producers have increasingly shifted toward live crab exports to China and South Korea, consequently reducing the supply of frozen product for Japan. To meet demand, Japanese importers have increased purchases from Russia’s Barents Sea region.

The United States, which halted imports from Russia, redirected demand toward alternative supplying countries, thereby driving market prices higher. Consequently, suppliers in Alaska, Canada, and Norway increasingly prioritized the U.S. market.

One of the key features of this report is a detailed analysis of the Chinese market, where imports of Russian live crab have grown rapidly. Based on Chinese customs statistics, logistics data, and interviews with Japanese trading companies actively engaged in business with Russia, this report examines how live crab transport networks from the Russian Far East and the Barents Sea are reshaping supply flows across Asian markets.
