Since 2023, the catch of Tanner crab (Chionoecetes bairdi) has surged unexpectedly in Japan. Landings are concentrated in a limited stretch of the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. According to estimates by a researcher at the Hokkaido prefectural government, the 2024 catch exceeded 1,000 metric tons, and the harvest in 2025 is also believed to have remained at a high level.

Until 2022, Tanner crab catches in Japan were negligible. Yet this is not the first time the species has appeared in large numbers. The same researcher notes historical records showing annual catches of several thousand tons in the mid-1980s. In 1986, landings reached 2,300 tons, followed by 1,400 tons in 1987, before declining sharply from 1988 onward.

The illustration is based on a photograph taken this January by a Minato News journalist at one of Japan’s largest wholesale markets. The crabs in the foreground are Tanner crab, labeled in Japanese as “Oo-zuwai,” literally meaning “large snow crab.”  The crabs depicted in the background are female snow crab, which are also commercially available in Japan.

Tanner crab are known for their rapid growth, and the sizes distributed in the Japanese market have been steadily increasing. The average market size may continue to grow even larger in the coming years.

While the Japanese government sets a total allowable catch (TAC) for snow crab, there is no TAC for Tanner crab. As the species gains commercial importance, sustainable use based on scientific stock assessment and management is required.
